5 Ways to Download a Browser on Windows Without a Browser[^1^]

PS: there are a lot of FTP clients out there that can be installed as Chrome extensions as well, so there's really not a strong enough reason not to use this instead of the above approach... however, I'm trying to respond to the specific question as asked by the OP -- "Is there any smarter way to go about [downloading files from a FTP server, instead of doing [Right-Click link] + [Click "Save link as.."] + [Click "Save"]]?"

If I click on a link that redirect to an ftp server (eg: ), nothing happen (file is not downloaded as it should be).If I open Chrome Network tab (by clicking on the page and choosing Inspect) here is what I got :

Just in case someone else comes across this. I had a user come to me asking for help downloading a file using a FTP link in Chrome. Turns out that Chrome removed FTP support recently. You can re-enable it like they did above if you have version 88 or earlier. Version 89 slated for Q1 of 2021 is expected to remove all FTP code so you will no longer be able to re-enable it with flags. You'll have to use a different browser like Firefox or use an HTTP/HTTPS link instead.

This assumes that you didn't use some kind of hack tool to remove it. If that's what you did then you'll have to download a browser somehow, either on another computer with a USB flash drive (the easiest way), or use FTP to grab it from Mozilla or wherever. You said you tried FTP but you didn't say exactly what the problem was.

Some browsers, including Chrome and Edge, have recently stopped supporting access to content via FTP. Consequently, users may experience trouble downloading files from the PASDA website. Using other browsers (chrome and firefox) I can click on a link that will download an FTP file onto my macbook pro. In safari 9.1 however I get an "unknown error" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1). The the link I am using is _groups/other_alt_loci. txt. I have tested this link on other older macs (safari 6) and the download works. I have also emptied the history, the web data, wiped the plists in /Library/Preferences associate to safari (i.e "com.apple.Safari.plist", "com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist", and "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" )and removed all files under /Library/Safari but still no joy.

Thank you Carolyn for your response. The reason I posted the issue is because I am a web developer that is concerned that our users that use safari may not be able to download the files they need when they click on a link to an FTP file. I personally use chrome as I am used to the developer tools.

By all accounts when a hyperlink is clicked in safari that links to a FTP file rather than a directory the file should download. If it's a directory it should open an FTP client or finder. When I got home yesterday I tested the FTP link in my original post on my personal mac running safari 9.1 (rather than the work laptop) and all seemed well. This leaves me to believe that there is something wrong with the safari on my work machine (even after the steps I took in the original post) or on the work's network (???). Thanks to Carolyn's response I read the linked discussion and tried out the opendns IPs, but still no joy.

Hi there,The file itself is ok without problems.Also I use chrome and put the url like this :password@hostname.com/full/path/to/file.csvand the browser can download this file to my pc.Manually upload also works great.

I'm sorry for the vagueness, so i tried downloading google chrome since thats the normal browser i use and whenever i try to click on the Download button on google chrome it doesn't start downloading, nor can i access websites like youtube nor a listing on etsy, i;m thinking the problem is the internet explorer enchanced security, or not do you know how i may disable it i used the 2019 Microsoft Datacenter. Well I am not new to Azure, and I observe that Microsoft cant stop itself from modifying the OS in the VMs in a way that is neither documented well nor static. E.g. above they say "can't download anything..." is very unspecific, however even if I disable the enhanced server IE security it still says that "downloads are not allowed by your organisation" or similar. But two years ago (to be precise MAy 2020) it was allowed.

And why Javascript is disabled in IE11 (and why IE11 is distributed with a VM that is announced as "patched till Jan 2022") and then this --censored by myself--- onedrive setup? Well you can download Onedrive, it somehow bypasses the IE11 download prohibition. But then it can't log in and why? "Java script is disabled in your browser". Well one mess after another. Also the bastion thing. Why it filters the right alt key? Can't type asterisk or backslash with a german keyboard at my end. All of that is somehow incomplete and intransparent...

Mascot Server includes Database Manager, which can be configured to download protein sequence databases from many sources using FTP (File Transfer Protocol), HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) and HTTPS (HTTP Secure). FTP is the oldest of these protocols by far, making its first appearance in 1971. Until some years ago, FTP was the best and only choice for large file downloads, and FASTA files used to be only made available on FTP servers. However, its technical advantages have diminished over time, and it has several problems that have been solved with newer protocols:

HTTPS is increasingly used as the default protocol. Earlier this year, the neXtProt project retired their FTP server, making downloads available by HTTPS only. This seems to be part of a general trend, perhaps triggered by the 50th anniversary of the protocol. Mozilla announced that the integrated FTP client will be removed from Firefox. Google removed FTP support in Chrome 95. Microsoft Edge, based on the same Chromium project as Google Chrome, removed FTP support in version 88.

One of the advantages of HTTPS over FTP is built-in error detection. This is a consequence of how the protocol is implemented. First, the HTTPS client (e.g. web browser) establishes an encrypted TLS connection to the server. Then, the client program tunnels HTTP traffic through the TLS connection. TLS is a low-level cryptographic protocol that encrypts data and as a side effect, also checks the data integrity. If there are any transfer errors, such as an unreliable network or data packets arriving in the wrong order, the connection terminates with an error. The HTTPS client can then resume the download from the last known good position. FTP has no error detection, so any transfer problems can silently result in corrupt data.

Database Manager continues to support FTP downloads with custom database definitions. However, from November 2021, the predefined databases no longer use FTP. Download URLs have been switched over to HTTP. This includes the commonly used databases like SwissProt, contaminants and all the EST databases, as well as taxonomy files downloaded from NCBI. Database Manager will automatically upgrade the connection to HTTPS if the target server has a redirect from HTTP to HTTPS. All the other functionality remains the same. 2ff7e9595c
